Driving help from Binghamton, N.Y.

Parks, resorts, dining, attractions, vacations

Hi. I will be driving down to the "World" via the I-81 from
Binghamton, N.Y. in early August and was wondering if someone could
tell which of the following two routes would be the better one to take.

At Harrisburg, Pa., would it better to stay on the 81 straight through
to Strasburg, Va. and then take the 66 and 17 into Fredericksburg and
onto the 95, or would it be better to get off the 81 at Harrisburg,
take the 83 and the 695 (Baltimore) before merging with the 95?

The latter (83, 695) is shorter, which intrigues me, but as it does
pass in and around the Baltimore and D.C.areas, would it be a wiser
choice to bite the bullet (40 or so extra miles) and stick with the 81
through Strasburg and avoid what could be a ton of traffic? I'll be
passing through on a Friday around noon.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I live south of Baltimore and have traveled 81/83/695/95 from Binghamton
several times over the past 40 years. The traffic around Balt&Wash. area
(including northern Virginia) is busy at the best of times. All it takes
is an accident and the road can be closed for hours. This seems to be
happening frequently lately. I've never gone the other way, but given a
choice I would avoid this area aand tavel an exra 40 miles.
